Why the fuss over Starbucks new instant coffee? Whats the big deal?

We all know that companies pay tens of thousands of dollars for their products to be featured in various tv shows, movies and magazines, but how far is too far? I found an interesting article recently when i checked google alerts which talked about the depression mindset of consumers and its long lasting impact on the consumption of premium products.

More specifically it heralded Starbucks VIA, their new instant coffee as the most recent itiration of a product which will become a staple in homes as they look to reduced their discretionary spending. Now alot of products come to mind when i think about reduced spending and tigthening budgets, Starbucks VIA isnt one of them.

Another interesting tid-bit i found was that when i searched in google for “best selling instant coffee” i found it strange that more than half of the links on the front page reffered to starbucks new instant coffee, i cant help but think that some of this hype generated is being drummed up by some rather clever and obviously talented PR agency, but who knows, i could be wrong!
