Caffeine fix helps Rotto swimmers

25 February 2012

Adrienne Payne will be walking up very early this weekend to smell and serve the coffee. The 18 year old Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club member and UWA engineering student will join Owen Ashby at the club’s cafe from 5am to cater for thirsty entrants in the Rottnest channel swim.

“My dad can come down and wash up” Adrianne said this week as she and Owen ordered milk and coffee for the big day. Owen will have piping-hot flat whites ready to go at the Cott Pylon Cafe in the club courtyard well before the first wave of island bound swimmers hits the water at 5:45am.

“It’s $3 for all coffees” Owen said. “We’ll have mugs if you want to sit down, but most will want to take away and get on the beach” .

The coffee beans will be the Horeca from Segafredo.

Neither Adrienne, who went to Shenton College, nor Owen has participated in the swim. “My daughter Lyndal Gordon is a Cott member and has been support boats a few times” Owen said.

Club manager Bianca Tabbakh praised Adrienne and Owen’s efforts. “They are fantastic volunteers and will help our club raise its profile” she said.
